Where HAVE you, or others, bought their cellphone, if it's a place other than the service provider's store?

Yes, I've bought AND SOLD from ebay.
Make sure its unlocked and for your own service provider.
All you have to do is change the SIM card in the phone.

Sure. Every time I lose one, I buy another that works with Sprint. Then I call Sprint and they activate it over the phone. I but the cheapest all the time because I keep losing it. so far it always worked seamlessly.

NOt all phones have sim cards..
I've always wanted one bec. I want to have the treo.. but of course the ones for 99 bucks are only for new customers. you need to activate an account or add a line to your existing account..
you can't buy the phone just to upgrade your phone.. unless you're willing to pay 700 bucks.. I'm not.
