A couple of times a year I get a backache. What do you do that helps, when you get a backache?

I go to a chiropractor, and until I get there, I use motrin which is a muscle relaxer.
Sometimes alternating heat with cold helps, so you can use a heat pad and then a cold ice pack.
Take a hot bath.
A lot of back pain is muscular, and if its not something that is happening all the time, then it could just be from moving wrong.
So, relax the muscles.

It all depends in which place, and what kind of pain can you describe it?

I used to get excruciating neck aches all the time. My chiropractor gave me some excellent exercises. I'm sure there are different ones for backaches. Basically, they stretched the muscles and provided relief. Either go to a professional or take a book out of the library for more info.

Smack in the middle, or across the whole width? If you can trace it more to the 2 sides as the center starting point for the pain, and you can sometimes feel it traveling or shooting down the back of your legs, then you have sciatica. Please see this post:

if it’s not sciatica, you just keep getting sore towards the middle part, more like the tail bone area, then you are overstraining your back. NEVER bend over to pick up something. You should always bend your knees, not your back. Try it a few times and slowly it becomes natural to you. if you will need to pick up a toy, you will suddenly find yourself bending your knees, and that way you don’t strain your back.
A hot shower for 20 minutes, beating right there adds some relief, sitting on a solid wooden chair only is a good way to sit, if you must. Otherwise, just try to walk around and stay mobile, don’t lie around too much.
