When you see Chaseedishe ladies with shopping bags from Manhattan department stores - what are they buying?
They dress a certain way and that way is not what the stores are selling, or are they? Are they buying accessories - pocketbooks etc.?
What do they find in department stores that they don't find in their own neighborhoods?
Please enlighten me, thanks!

classy clothing and shoes.
Macy's is a great store for that, I think their prices are better than a lot of community stores as well.

Last time I checked out Manhattan dept. stores there were some chaseedishe ladies, maybe two, but mostly the customers consisted of non-chaseedishe ladies. So, amother, what is your REAL gripe here?

Maybe they can't afford the local prices. Maybe they are buying hoimewares, sheets, towels, underware, socks, anything.

macy's is no mystery. The mystery is stores like H&M or Strawberry, where I see chassidishe ladies going through the racks. Maybe they, like I, are hoping against hope they'll find something acceptable? Although I don't look through the racks--I just scan the store, can tell at a glance there's nothing there for me, and walk out the door in 30 seconds. They must have more time to shop than I have--I can't afford to spend so much time trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack.
Or maybe they're not shopping at all--maybe they're just looking to see what passes for clothing in the outside world, the way we might go to a museum to see how Australian aborigines live.

They're probably shopping in Midtown for the same reason that people from Crown Heights, Flatbush, or BP shop there - greater selection, more sales (I.e., better pricing), etc. Plus, it's just nice to get out of Brooklyn every once and awhile!

You can find lots of Tzniusdik sweaters and blazers during the Fall/Winter season.
