Start them early, whether you need their help or not!
I only have a baby, so I'm just talking from my head, nto from experience.
But I think you can stick the kid in the tub with the toys to wash. Let them wash the outside of the fridge. Depends on the age. Just show them you need their help so they don't get spoiled!! Also, little kids LOVE helping. They feel so big!!!
I'm a teacher. Last year when I was doing 2 year olds, if I needed to clean some paint off the floor, all of a sudden all the kids wanted baby wipes to help you. It saved me from a dirty job, as well!!

My kids help with everything. As soon as they are old enough to carry the smallest thing I ask for their help. Now they love it bc they want to make mommy happy. They carry the challah to the table, or give tatty his kiddush cup, they help sweeping, shoveling snow, raking the leaves. I bought from the dollar store a small broom shovel etc.
When I dust the livingroom my daughter wants to also. I even taught my 3 yr old, at her request how to peel carrots and she wasn't half bad.
The house stays a lot cleaner bc they like to please me and they know how to put things away.
