Our tenant has moved out after living here twenty years. I plan to move into her apartment and I have mold sensitivities and asthma, therefore I would like to either replace the carpet or shampoo the existing carpet.
Would shampooing it remove all possible mold?
Or is it safer to replace?

The carpet is 20 years old and you're asthmatic?
For sure replace it!

Why not shampoo it?
Sorry, I'm naive about carpet.

Replace it.
If possible I would change it to a washable hard surface.
That's just me.
If something spills it's easily wiped up.
Easier to clean, wash, etc.

I have a tenant below me and hard floor would be really hard for her. That's why I'm maskim to put carpet. For the love of my fellow neighbors :-)

I would think that you should replace it. You may want to consider hard floor in YOUR bedroom, as that impacts you the most. If the noise is too much for your tenant, you can put small rugs in the areas that make the most noise.

Is there a type of carpet that is better for people with asthma?
Very interested.

That's what I'd like to know as well. I have severe asthma.

I do space planning professionally, and questions about things such as soundproofing come up fairly often. To date I have not had a client use this product. If you try it, please let know how well it works!

Carpet is the WORST thing for asthma! There is no way to ever get it completely clean.
You can use a cork underlay for the flooring you choose, or even install cork tiles that are sealed. They are beautiful, and easy to keep clean.
Google "mold toxicity", and you will be horrified at how serious an affect it has on your health.

Cork underlay is supposed to act as a noise barrier? Cork tiles sounds interesting. I will look into that. Know anyone in Brooklyn who sells those?
I live in a moldy apartment and have gotten quite ill here, so no need for me to google anything about the effects of mold. I live it every day.

I Googled cork flooring and I may pursue it as an option. I'd never heard of this before. Thanks for mentioning it.
