My child has the coxsakie virus. I want to clean my toys to prevent my other kids from catching it (if they don't already have the germs).
What should I use to get rid of the germs?

Bleach is great on all-plastic items but will corrode any metal. You don't actually need to sterilize the toys and other household surfaces--just washing thoroughly in soap and very hot water will remove most germs. Household cleaners will work, too, but you have to rinse very well to make sure you got rid of all the residue, esp. if it's something kids will put in their mouths.

I do home childcare, and I have been instructed to do a through wash with hot water and soap/detergent. It washes all the germs off without chemicals; after all you don't want the chemicals around children anyway.

Tip: Throw it all in the bathtub with soap/bleach and hot water. After it soaks for a while, let it drain and if you have a removable shower head, you can quickly rinse each item.

purell sells wipes - I know that regular purell is good for disinfecting hands - so maybe the wipes would work for toys...

If you want to sterilize them you can put them in the dish washer. When I worked in a daycare I used to bring all of the teething rings and non- electric things home and run them through a cycle. I did this once a week.

Oh, yeah, the dishwasher is the best. If I had one, that's what I'd do. Easy.
