Hi,
We have had a very challenging winter and were scheduled to go away Sunday and Monday but for financial reasons, we decided to ditch it and sleep home and do stuff without a car rental or hotel expense.
I'm a little disappointed but I'm good at getting over it if I plan for a really fun 2 days.
We have to be home for our kids by 4 pm each day but can leave 8:30am and the D train is very close by.
One of the two days we can go full day if need be and come home 7pm.
We are looking for a mix of:
-Outdoorsy ideas
-Fun attractions that r more activity based
- One day in NYC and the other day we would love to go to Long Island or somewhere like that (not too far but not too close/typical) and that's where I'm stuck--I kinda know NYC a little...but the rest not really.
We r not movie or entertainment goers so that's out.

For a one day trip I recommend Norwalk, CT. It's about an hour drive from nyc. It has a ferry ride to sheffield island, a children's museum and aquarium. Great for small kids. If you don't want to rent a car, Metro north train stops right in front of the aquarium. (Ferry ride is right there too.)

Sorry just to clarify: we don't have a car. We live in Brooklyn and can access NYC by subway andparts of Long Island by LIRR.
This trip is just for my husband and me

DH and I did Norwalk ferry ourselves with a baby. It was very peaceful and relaxing - we brought a picnic lunch for the island. (I don't know about buses but the PP mentioned trains)

You can go to anywhere to the Rockaways and spend time at the beach; it's not so hot yet so you won't have bikini-clad women. There's bike rentals at B116th you can do that too. Fly kites, dip toes in the water, have a picnic.

Is this open yet? I thought it usually doesn't open for the season until somewhere around Memorial Day.
