Hopefully some of you are hikers and familiar enough with what's around ny to give some recommendations.

I am looking for a couple of hikes that are:

-within 2 hours of the city

-accessible via public transport of some sort

-at beginner level, so relatively easy, no crazy climbs and not a full day affair

-ideally not crazy crowded but also not abandoned

-have clearly marked trails

-good for a beginner who wants to dip her toes in and see if hiking is her calling Smile

Thanks for any all suggestions! Grateful in advance!

I'm a big fan of the site/app All Trails. Lots of filters to help you find the right hike for you

Hmm, I think your most difficult requirement to meet will be accessible by public transportation. For the most part, mass transit travels through populated areas and doesn't stop at trailheads, which tend to be in more remote locations. One great hike that does meet that requirement is called Breakneck Ridge, which the Metro North stops right next to, but it's somewhat challenging - not all day at all, but definitely some steep climbs involved. The closest great hike to NYC is called Giant Stairs and is right off the Palisades, about 10 minutes from the GW, but no mass transit options that I know of.

This site is great, and in the descriptions they tell if you if they're train accessible. I've never been on a bad hike from here.

Flat Rock Brook Nature Center in Englewood, NJ fits your bill. My family had a great time there last Chol Hamoed. It was our beginners hike. (We progressed to a a more advanced hike in the summer in upstate New York.) Although, we did go there by car. Their website says they are accessible via public transit. It is located right over the George Washington Bridge. www.flatrockbrook.org. Enjoy!

I honestly don't know where the divide between "hiking" and "walking" is, or which side this falls on, but you can also try Rockefeller State Park. https://parks.ny.gov/parks/59/details.aspx
