I recently started teaching middle school English. It's my first time teaching English!
I am trying to put together a good reading list for my students.
Does anyone have any suggestions for must reads for 7th and 8th graders?
Anything you remember reading, or your kids love.
TIA!

I loved A Little Princess.
My ds is reading Animal farm now in school, I did it in HS.

Nothing at all objectionable in any of the suggestions so far but I do wonder: is the school going to approve the list first?
Do you have a school library?

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. (I don't think that was in class; I chose it off an approved list for a book report.)

Thanks! Keep them coming!
This list is only for my class and I will look into the books a little before I put them on.
Just for frame of reference its a dating leumi girls school in israel. So we don't really have a large English library but most of my students have a kindle or similar app.
I teach the native speakers so they are on a pretty high reading level

Hatchet (there's a brief reference to parent having an affair but IIRC it's pretty subtle. You'll want to read it to make sure)
Call it Courage
Jerry Spinelli writes some interesting books for that age
Holes

if you're looking for more contemporary titles:
Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin
Fever 1793 and Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson
Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
The Hunger Games trilogy
Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullally Hunt
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly
Forget Me Not by Ellie Terry
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
haven't read, but female students really like Wendy Mass's books (Heaven Looks a Lot Like the Mall, etc.), and books by Todd Strasser, and if they like dystopian, Divergent by Veronica Roth
