Yes, I give Benadryl before bed to help them sleep, it dries up the cough.

I would think the only thing Benadryl accomplishes is make your child sleepy. Other than that, it's an anti-histamine, and doesn't treat the cough.
Ventolin inhalors can help with a cough.

a cough caused by a virus is also a histamine reaction, and benadryl can help with that. It's not always the greatest idea though, because the mucus causing the cough is also how the virus is expelled, and by suppressing the reaction you may be causing the virus to hang around longer in the body.

This.
But at the same time, adequate sleep helps the body get rid of the virus faster too...
I have given benadryl to my kids when they had a bad cold. But only when it affected their sleep or they got a post nasal drip. Usually when it's really bad that I figured I'd check in with the doctor.
My dh's family has a history of silent pneumonia. So if there is a bad cold I always have the doctor check their chest.

For a post-nasal drip, a decongestant would make more sense than giving benadryl.
Ask your doctor about flonase. I find it works really well for post-nasal drip.

Yes. My dr suggests benadryl too for a post nasal drip. He claims it dries it up.
