I'm trying to fix up my dining room/ living room, the furniture is really mismatched, & our sefarim bookshelves are just regular bookshelves so I probably need to buy some new furniture (but hopefully not too much, it's so expensive!) & I have no idea of where to start- do I need an interior decorator or designer? What's the difference? Can anyone please tell me about how much do they charge? Also, I would really appreciate any recommendations (we're in Brooklyn if that makes a difference)! TIA!

You can use either. An interior designer has a certification. That should indicate competence and certainly indicates training, but a decorator can also be good at this.
