A woman in Parkville, MD, upon visiting her not-local Wal-Mart, became the apparent victim of a Code Adam when checking out with her baby daughter.
She writes about her harrowing experience on her blog.
Several valid points are made in comments...
First, that Wal-Mart mishandled the situation is obvious.
Second... apparently the rent-a-cops have no ID stating who they work for, so to have someone come up to you and tell you to hand over your kid with no supporting ID makes sense.
Enough with the numbers... the situation however begs the questions... do you have valid proof that your non-verbal child is indeed yours? And what constitutes valid proof? Babies grow and change so much that photos can be outdated sometimes by the time mom or dad gets to the photomat. And just because you're in the photo doesn't prove you're the child's parent or legal guardian.
While I have NS's name on my Israeli ID, there's no photo attached or fingerprints (and fingerprints would take a while to validate anyway). He has his own health insurance card.
So... in addition to proper training from store security and employees (yeah, like that would happen), what kind of ID can a parent carry that will readily and quickly prove their non-verbal child is indeed theirs?

she should sue the pants off of them. I dont know why the police couldnt at least have charged them with illegally holding her. she needs to get an attorney now , get a hold of the surveillance tapes and take care of business.

Crazy.
I don't think it would happen to me, dd is my portrait (with dh's hair).
Dd has her own passport, no identity card as we've been lazy...
But what a crazy, crazy story.
