Did not read all of the Lakewood thread.
School hours are so long, public school is only 6 hours. If the building space is the problem, what about splitting the day one group 7-1230 one group 1230-6 or thereabouts. Would need more teachers. But would instantly give 2x room.Agree not ideal but better than some kids having no school no?

it's not an entirely new idea, but it presents significant issues for the parents, who have to figure out childcare at odd hours.

Two things. First of all squeezing both excellent kodesh and excellent chol into those shorter hours seems quite difficult.
Second, it seems that at least in Lakewood, the public schools struggle with the short hours and therefore needing all the extracurricular clubs and teams to fill the hours.

I can’t see how schools would be able to shorten their day and simultaneously be able to have a quality kodesh program along with state requirements. It just doesn’t seem possible.

You'd also need two sets of teachers.
It's not a good idea. The teachers would be rushing through the material and then parents would hate it because they'd need to pay for both tuition and child care. And parents would be getting fewer hours for the money, but costs wouldn't go down, so tuition wouldn't be lower.

It's not ideal. But neither is kids nit having school at all. Could be cheaper tuition which could mean women working less hours so could be with kids more. Different not absurd as the world used to be like this.

You'd need boys in the morning and girls in the afternoon because of zmanei tefillah, and girls would never daven in school. Among all the other issues... But kudos for thinking creatively.

Parents will have to deal with and entertain their children a good part of the day.

Denim do you have a child without a place to go to school? Doesn't sound like it.
Didn't say it was ideal. But neither is the current situation. Kids should be at school to learn not so their parents can work.

We already have a problem with kids being bored after school when they come home at 5.

If their parents can't work they can't pay tuition, so it's a vicious cycle.
Like everyone else wrote, it's not enough hours to teach our kids limudiei kodesh and limudei chol.
Also, we aren't lacking slots for 50% of the population, it's more like 5%. So you're punishing everybody to help a few people. I would love to be part of a solution, but this isn't it.

Being bored is good for creativity. The problem is that don't have enough time to get bored and get through the bored and get creative. Seriously seriously.

Well, short days are a thing in some countries. People get childcare. But it has to be annoying if you don't drive unless the childcare drives

Is the problem in Lakewood that a number of children don't get accepted because there is no space in classes in any school or because a large number of children want to get in to a specific school (with a limited number of slots) and refuse to go to another school because it doesn't have such a good name or the highest status?

A MUCH MUCH simpler solution is to open more schools. For everyone who cares SO much about the kids who did not get in to school yet... stop blaming and open a school or at least help to open a new school.... or help to build up the existing schools that are weaker and just need a good push to survive.
