Writing to settle a debate.
What does the Yiddish name “Leib” mean?
Lion? Heart? Both?
Second question: if there was a child named Lev would you name another in the same close family “Leb”?
Thank you!

Thank you for the replies.
I always thought leibidik came from Lev in Hebrew. I knew Leib was lion but thought it may also mean heart. Thanks for straightening me out!

Doesn't leibedik come from "lieb" -- like life? I don't know any Yiddish, but that's what I always thought.

Leib is lion, but I always thought that leib in leibedik would be from life (leben), as leibedik is lively.

Lebedig means lively. Leben-life. Entirely different word from Leib.

I think in Russian Lev means wolf. But I may be getting the animal wrong. I know some Russian Israelis name their sons Lev because it goes in both languages.

Lev means lion in Russian.
Wolf in Yiddish is volf, not sure in Russian.

Leib is a lion and hartz is a heart. But leeb (as in Leeba) is love.

Leibedig means "alive" or "lively" . The word lebedig comes from the word "Leiben" which means life.
