How long?

Before.
After braiding you can sometimes play around with oven temperature when baking to get it to rise.
What is making you ask?

Thx.
I’m asking because I’ve seen different recipes with varying amounts of rising...
ex: 1 1/2 hr before braid, 10 min after
Or 1 hr each
Etc.

I could never go by the clock. The room could be different temperatures and different levels of humidity so it'll effect the rising. I look for First rise-dough has to almost double, Second rise (after braiding) dough has to look very puffy.

Interesting because my challah recipe that I've used for 9 years suddenly started to flop. After.it gets in the oven, it no longer rises at all. It rises before braided and after braided, but then stops. Never happened before this year.

Did you move to a new house?
Do you have a new oven?

There might be a problem with the oven ignitor.
