[quote="giselle"]Most of my friends wouldn’t care, but I would. We raise our kids very open minded and unsheltered, but things like this bother me. I think people are too cavalier about these things, not realizing the origin and history of some of these holidays.[/quote
Look up the origin of this song. Nothing to do with x-mas

No. I just don’t want this song to be a song my kids will here every day and will start singing it also sometimes as a habit. It’s just kind of embarrassing

So what if they sing it? Will they stop being Jewish? There's nothing Christian about this song. It's a lovely song and I wouldn't care at all if my kids would sing it. If they sing hail Mary I'd be worried though

Some of the tunes of niggunim have a German army original. Which is way worse don't you think? Oh well but I guess jingle bells is worse for a lot of people

Would you want them to sing it in front of teachers and friends?

Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh,
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
Through the fields we go
Laughing all the way.
Bells on bob-tail ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight. |
The full lyrics are:
Merry x-mas ladies
Merry x-mas Mr. Buble
Are you ready to sing a little Jingle bells?
Yes
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way!
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way!
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Dashing through the snow

Here is the info about the origins of the song. NOTHING at all to do with christm@s. And it does not start with "merry chritm@s" at all. It was for thanksgiving at first.

They play 7 songs for 2 minutes each (so the child knows how long to brush) like - 5 little monkeys, London bridge is falling down and ect.... and one song is jingle bell.
I didnt know till I bought it and tried it out that it had that song. My first thought was who cares its just one song used only one out of seven times they brush and they dont even know what it has to do with , but now that I'm thinking more about it I think I'll return it - what if they become familiar with it and start singing it?
What are your thoughts/would you be ok with it?
(I'm more yeshivish which is why I made those two categories in the polls) |
In my son’s piano book, the tune is for a song called “crunchy flakes” so maybe learn those lyrics instead!
The lyrics:
Crunchy Flakes, Crunchy Flakes, Give you what it takes.
They are very good for you. And they’re tasty too.
Crunchy Flakes, Crunchy Flakes, Give you what it takes.
They will make you big and strong. Healthy all day long.

That’s just the Michael Buble version. Not the original.
Any kid who has ever seen an Elmo’s World episode knows the tune! I wouldn’t worry about it.

You are incorrect, Squishy. The original lyrics do not mention x-mas. How hard is it to look this up in Wikipedia? Here, I'll give you the link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingle_Bells
The association with x-mas was added in years after the song was written. You quoted one particular instance of a performance of the song.
Jingle Bells became co-opted by people celebrating x-mas, in the same way that snowflakes became co-opted. Ladies, as it happens, snowflakes are not unique to x-mas. Nevertheless, many Orthodox people would avoid wearing those sweaters with snowflake patterns, or using wrapping paper with snowflakes, because of that association.
I personally have no trouble with Jingle Bells, but that version of the London Bridge song the OP mentions, with its "take the key and lock her up" lyrics https://www.songsforteaching.c.....l.php might make me want to return the toothbrush. j/k

Squishy, a little further Googling would have led to the information that Mr. Michael Buble, the songwriter you though was referred to in the original lyrics of Jingle Bells, was born in 1975. Jingle Bells was composed in the 1850s.

Joy,
I know the song as starting with Merry x-mas Ladies. This is what comes to my mind, so I googled "Merry x-mas Ladies" knowing those words are part of the song.
Using your infallible Wikipedia, the song is listed as a x-mas song with many versions. Since it is now a x-mas song, no matter the origin, it isn't appropriate for Jewish children to sing. It is sort of like Easter is a now Christian holiday even though it started as passover.
If my kids came home from school, singing Jingle Bells because their friends taught them the words, I would be upset. DC came home in the 4th grade singing a McDonald's jingle because her friend taught her. This is not for jewish kids.

Squishy, as the rest of my post clearly stated, it is obvious that Jingle Bells has been co-opted by celebrators of x-mas. [The question is whether we allow that co=opting to dictate our choices of toothbrushes, sweaters, and more.] Don't twist what I said in order to deflect from the fact that you said in your post that the original lyrics included the name of someone (Mr. Michael Buble), who was born in 1975.

I can’t get over the snowflake thing. So if we can’t associate snowflakes with Chanuka (obviously the Christians beat us to it...) then what do we associate with the winter season? Hot pink plastic flamingos since so many frum people go to Florida then?????

Ravenclaw, I think the co-opting of things like snowflakes is ridiculous. But yes, I do know people who refuse to wear a sweater with a snowflake pattern! That includes my very LWMO sixteen-year-old son, so it's not strictly a yeshivish or chassidish phenomenon. You usually do see these sweaters only in "holiday" catalogues, so I sort of see how this association happens.
But if toothbrushes are used all year round, I'd think that Jingle Bells is *less* likely to be associated with x-mas. So I'm all in favor of the Jingle Bells toothbrush!
