Agree with much of the above.
Regarding black, I saw a non-Jewish clip on how to look elegant/rich/classy and it suggested wearing neutrals as opposed to colors.

Just realized I never came back to comment, thanks for all the responses! I'm going to play it safe and buy a solid black dress! RE the dress in the original post, I love it! My husband is Persian and they tend to go all out at their weddings so I had to invest in some nicer gowns (but of course now I don't really have anywhere else to wear them, alas). Knowing the couple here, it definitely would not be too revealing for that crowd, but I'll just save it for the next Persian simcha
