It depends on the kid ,when he started walking how his walk is, what condition the shoes are in , generally I spend money on my toddlers shoes Drs always encourage good shoes at these ages( I spend more on their shoes then I would ever on mine...)

Shoes get worn out. They get molded/stepped in according to the foot. I wouldn't have kids of any age wear hand me down/used shoes.

Depends how worn they are.
Winter boots and Shabbos shoes (not worn too much). Yes.
Sneakers or very worn Shabbos shoes. No.
Crocs and water shoes. For sure.

I used hand me down shoes for my kids besides for my first child. He grew out of them so quickly and at $80 a pair they were perfect to pass down to his sibling close in age. ( he was the only one I spent so much money on. Then I got smarter and discovered sales and stride rite)
My former landlord had a shoe gemach and I even used those shoes for my son's first pair.

Is there any scientific research to support the idea that hand me downs are bad, or is this just the accepted wisdom?
like I BH have excellent feet and I wore all sorts of random shoes as a kid

I try to buy new, but I save any shoes in good condition to use as spares. I will hand down Shabbos shoes, since they are mainly for looks, and I would put weekday shoes on for long walks and playing in the park even on Shabbos.

NO. No hand me down shoes.
The insoles of shoes form to the foot of the wearer, matching its shape. That means that a pair of shoes will shape itself and develop wear and tear spots that are unique to an individual’s foot -- and not so good for the next child's different foot.
The exception might be rarely-worn shoes. The shoes one kid wore once, to a wedding, might be able to be handed down. Or rarely-worn snow boots. Otherwise, no.

I've also heard about the shoe getting molded to the child's foot and it shouldn't be used again.
But if condition is excellent and it doesn't seem too worn, then why not? Toddlers usually outgrow their shoes pretty fast, so how long would they use it for already-I would prefer a hardly worn quality shoe over a new cheap shoe that doesn't support the child's foot properly...
My toddler had her shoes less than 2 weeks before she hid one of them, never to be found again, and I had to get her another pair, and good shoes aren't cheap and they say that shoes should be properly supportive etc, especially at this age...

My toddler wore his first shoe for literally 6 weeks @$80. I really can’t save it for the next or at least give it away?
What about all those shoes we send to EY? are you saying they all have bad feet or is this just for toddler years?

I chose to use them. My 2 yo was so happy in them- perfect size. I am using hand me down crocs and sandals. (The sandals were not worn out because my older child wore them every other day and grew out of them rather quickly.)

Since toddlers weigh so little, they don’t mold the shoe much. I’d use it if it was structurally sound and looked like my kid had worn it for a couple weeks. Usually this lasts from age 1 to age ~4 when they destroy the shoes every other month.
Dd, 18mo is the third toddler to wear her shoes.

this post makes me laugh
this is not a black and white issue.
as we have seen many times on imamother- everyone has different priorities when it comes to spending money.
personally- I wouldn not throw out a perfectly good pair of shoes- that got outgrown after 6 weeks. im sure many ( especially those who accept from shoe drives) would be thrilled to receive them.
no one is saying (at least not how I understood them) that if you were used shoes you will be doomed to have bad feet. used shoes are not poisen. for a toddler that is beginning to walk -some people find the fit to be more important than an older child. the child may also not be able to express if the shoes dont fit properly so its improtant to have them fit.
I think the question would be better phrased:
"how important is it to buy brand new shoes that were fit by an expert fitter for a toddler?" "would you take the risk of giving your toddler second hand shoes that may not fit as well if you could afford new ones?"
personally id prioritzie spending money on new shoes for a toddler and have them wear all hand-me -down clothing. though im not saying this should neccessarily be the top priority for everyone.

Barefoot is best. Get flexible soles for the first pair.
