For some reason my washed laundry come out smelling. But it tends to happen only to dark coloured washes.
(Light or coloured stuff don't smell)
What is happening and what can I do?
It's been going on for months. I often have to rewash them in just conditioner.

I have had exactly the same problem.
unfortunately nthing helped.
I changed detergant
I washed on hot
I cleaned the washing mashine
used vinegar and baking soda
used special antismell stuff for laundry and washing mashine...
in the end I had to buy all black clothes (maily cheap socks and underwear) new, discard the old and the problem was solved.
till today I have NO CLUE what caused the laundry (mainly cotton) to smell foul.
maybe one item was for some reason smelly (foul?) and it was 'contgous' and infected the other laundry ???

Try running an empty wash in your machine with washing machine detergent
Put baking soda in your load. Makes such a difference!

Run the machine cleaning cycle with affresh tablets. Run it 3x with 3 different tablets if your clothes are coming out smelly. ETA: the machine needs to be empty, no clothes, when running cleaning cycles.
Also check the gasket, the ring of rubber around the opening that acts as a seal when you close the door. It could be dirty and moldy or have wet stuff hiding there. Actually, do this first, then run the machine cleaning cycles.

Check the tubing from the water source for a smell. Water may be staying stagnant in there the cold water tubing. You can inexpensively replace the tubing if it smells.
Putting clothes that smell out in the sun before rewashing helps.

If the gasket has mold stains, how do I go about cleaning it?

That means the mold penetrated the surface. It can easily be replaced. Call the manufacturer to buy a replacement for that part.
Also buy an inexpensive lasso on Amazon to keep the door adjar when not in use from now on, so it doesn't happen with the new one.

What would I search for on amazon for the lasso?

The second link is nice because you can just leave it hanging even when you need to close the machine door for a wash.

This part tells me the problem is in the clothing rather than the machine.
Try washing the clothes with a sanitizing solution. Try vinegar. Try Really hot water.

Actually, I have noticed that smell problem sometimes as well and it seems to affect only items made of pure, thick cotton. Among these, it is contagious inside the washing machine.
I think it comes when damp, sweaty or wet cotton items get stored too long in the dirty laundry basket in warm weather before laundering. Guess it's some form of cotton mold.
Washing things repeatedly at higher than usual temperatures can help. But I've also thrown things away that didn't improve.
