Some of you posted some helpful advice. As for the rest of you, I'm just trying to learn, you don't have to be so nasty.

We’re not trying to be nasty.
We’re trying to make you realize that people who work with mentally ill patients with inadequate training are very likely to do serious harm. We’ve seen this happen time and again, and want to prevent you, a well intentioned person, from falling into that trap.

OP - Your husband meant well finding the course for you. I hope its a nice launching point into learning more.
Is it important to you to earn money? There are people who take training to volunteer at crisis hotlines. That may be of interest.

This is a great point. The training to work on a crisis hotline or suicide hotline is invaluable, and would be a logical next step if you really want to help.
Hatzolah is always looking for people to do "welfare checks" if a friend or neighbor is concerned about a vulnerable person. People who have teens that are in crisis need support and evaluation.
Beit Shemesh has an emotional health intervention team that consists of two counselors and one social worker. One counselor is for a teen in crisis, the other is a family therapist. The social worker helps determine if the teen (or parent) needs to be inpatient or not, and what the plan is to keep everyone safe. They also follow up for the next few days to make sure that things are settled down, or what further assistance is needed.
I think that would be a great job for you.

My brother got his start at a new career volunteering at a crisis center where he was in grad school for math.
He became so interested in the field and was so good at it, that he got his masters in Psychology (changed course completely). He eventually wound up as the director of a crisis/outreach program,

Do you charge money for people who you do first aid for after gaining Red Cross first aid certification after an 8 hour course?
So this is no different

This actually isn't a bad idea. This may be something I would be interested in. I don't have to earn money, it was just a thought. Thank you for posting this idea. It's something I actually haven't thought about.

There are also peer certification courses that will allow you to be a peer mentor. This can lead to a paying job. I will find the info and post for you

I have thousands of hours working in addictions and mental health and I still would not feel comfortable charging for my services. I can’t understand what you think an 8 hour course will teach you. You know people get Phd’s To do counselling, right?

I don’t think anyone is trying to be nasty. They are trying to keep you from harming someone.

This is not true at all. As I have mentioned, friends of mine are certified life coaches who received their certification after days of training. They help people daily and charge for their services. Again, this was just an idea I had that I was just putting out there.

Life coaches are only trained to help people achieve goals. It is completely separate from any mental health field. They are not trained for anything related to mental illness or addiction.
Your friends are probably doing harm.

As other people pointed out, how you file your taxes is the least of your problems.
I am a nurse who did additional training to get a psych certification (many more than 8 hours) and even then, I am not qualified to provide mental health treatment. The certification was to help me be more effective in dealing with mental health issues as they come up in the course of my work.
I don't know what you can learn in an 8 hour course that would qualify someone to provide a service and charge money for it. At worst you'd be preying on people in need who don't understand the various degrees or certifications that you need to provide counseling and thinks that anyone who calls themselves a mental health coach or whatever is qualified.
Some posters gave you good suggestions for avenues that you can pursue, like peer support, that may lead to additional training and certifications down the line.

I am aware that I and many others are beating a dead horse. But if one person reads this and avoids harm - it would be worth it.
Being a life coach is VERY different then a therapist or a counselor. There is space for a life coach as long as they know their role and avoid areas that are risky for them and the individuals working with them.
A coach should not touch trauma, or anything in a persons past with a 20 foot pole.
Peer support typically is not paid by the peer you are supporting, maybe an agency would pay
