Would you continue sending your child (age 5) on the bus if the bus driver was a bitter lady, never wore a smile, and was rude to you (the parent) unnecessarily?
It bothers me to send him on a bus with a driver like that.

Kill her with kindness.
Every morning, smile, thank her, and wish her a good day. Every afternoon, smile, thank her, and wish her a good evening.

Think of it as her doing you a favor.

Remember, the children are often noisy and don't listen, the parents are often obnoxious and entitled, especially if the bus is late. The bus probably has no air conditioning. Traffic can be a headache. She is not making an amazing salary. Her hours stink-earlier in the morning and smack in the middle of the afternoon- but usually not a full day with full pay. She probably does this to pay bills and views the children as privileged. Do I need to go on?

Hakarat Hatov, will go a long way. It may take some time to break though her exterior shell. She is probably jaded from previous years.

Yes I would. Perfect opportunity to teach your kid to smile, say good morning, and be kind even if its not returned. Some people have hard lives and are not outwardly cheerful.

Smiles. Small gift cards. Fresh cookies.
You don’t know what’s going on in her life.
Teach your child to say good morning and thank you going off.
Make sure to wave to driver and say thank you. Good morning. How are you.
We’ve had some real nasty bus drivers do a full 360 by the end of the year and be our best friends and go out of their way for our kids. Not all do. But some.

I take it you don't want to do that.

Unless you have reason to think that a sulky bus driver will make your child's trip to school unsafe - keep him on the bus.

Not everyone we meet is pleasant.

There was a bitter, angry lady (who the neighbors claim is an anstisemite) walking her two dogs around the neighborhood,leaving dog waste.

Now, I decide to befriend her. It took a few weeks for her to see I was genuine and we are friends for seventeen years. She cleans up after her dogs all around our Frum neighborhood. She greets good shabos, good yomtov, a kushern pesach, have an easy fast and. the other neighbors started greeting her too...

Maybe present her with a poem how a school bus driver can be a factor in a child's life...

I would say $/gift is too showy this early in the year, but I would for Thaksgiving.
A closed cold bottle of water is thoughtful.

I have a neighbor who used to bring the bus driver a bag of fresh pastries every now and then. I don't think it's cheesy.

Even just a "Hello (Judy), its good to see you this morning!" with a big genuine smile can go a long way!
Isnt there a bus monitor for such a young child?

The bus picks up bigger boys also, through grade 5-6 or so

By us, kids under the age of 5are not allowed on the bus and the bus is K-4.
They tell you that if your child can't behave or needs to be monitored, then they are not welcome on the bus.
The only busses that have monitors are for special needs.

Is this the Cleveland Heights driver? My son said this morning, I hope we get a new bus driver!
She yells at the kids all the time.
