My 8 month old has a cold. Seems fine otherwise. He starts coughing only when he is asleep and keeps waking up from it. Any advice? Poor boy 👦

It’s so hard when they’re sick!! Can you elevate the mattress with a pillow? Do you have a humidifier?

1. See a doctor to make sure it's not more serious than a cold/ post nasal drip.
2. Use a squirt of saline in each nostril every hour, and let it drip down his throat.
3. Use a cool most humidifier in the room.
4. Offer extra fluids (nursing/ water)

Firstly, the position of lying flat can make him cough. Try to get his upper body into more raised position so the phlegm/mucus doesn't come up. Like putting a pillow under the mattress to raise the head. I sometimes put my daughter in her carriage...
Also, I found that sometimes if the cough didn't go away after a few days, it needed antibiotics for infection. Check with your doctor.

My baby had a constant cough only when sleeping, the pediatrician sent us to the ENT, and it turned out to be such bad reflux (and it was silent reflux as she wasn’t vomiting) that her esophagus had eroded. She had to go right on Prilosec. So please check it out.

Having the same with my 20 month old. I would try it but afraid the smell and his eyes would bother him. What’s your experience?

Not a pleasant smell but better then the cough and the eyes are closed. I do this often and have had no issues.

Several of my kids had this and it turned out to be nighttime allergies - inhalers at nighttime resolved the coughing.

What is a nighttime allergy?
I’m dealing with something similar right now.

I didn’t have good experience. It caused a terrible smell in the entire house and it didn’t help for the cough.
But I still think you should try it. Many have great experiences.

It's common for asthma/allergies to get worse at night (due to dustmites in the pillow, bed, etc. or other) - apparently some kids who don't present with any asthma/allergies during the day just cough a lot at night because of this, and an inhaler helps with that. My oldest would cough at night for months until I finally switched doctors and he diagnosed this. She started sleeping peacefully through the night after 2 nights on the inhaler.
