I grew up with the word panties, so it never seemed odd to me. My great grandmother called them drawers (pronounced draaaaaw-eeers with a southern accent) or knickers. Knickerbockers are boys (or men's) short pants/trousers, and not to be confused with knicker underwear that is worn underneath.
A sofa was a davenport - where the heck did that word come from?
In England a fanny is a woman's private parts. I never understood kids calling things "front tushie" and "back tushie". That sounds extremely weird to me. When DD was little, we just called them "girl parts."
In England, pecker means attitude or good spirits. He said to me once "I love it when you call, it really keeps my pecker up." It took me at least 5 minutes of laughing before I could catch my breath. I said to him "Um, do you know what pecker means in America?" He was rather shocked to find out that it was something entirely different.
(Pecker means "boy parts" in American.)

Hebrew has some funny ones that don't translate, as well.
Kelev is a male dog. If you have a female dog - my Ulpan teacher said he's not allowed to teach us that word.
An old man is zaken, but you can't call a woman that no matter how old she is. You have to say geveret.
It's mamash complicated, you know?

That one actually does work in English...
Language is very cultural.
It drives me crazy when a forty year old professional woman says "אני צריכה לעשות פיפי" in my world only toddlers say that but in the chiloni world it's perfectly normal

yes, I’ve always wondered why some people call diapers “pampers “!!!?? |
I do it b'davka to differentiate between cloth diapers for burping babies and pampers worn as, well, pampers. Otherwise when I ask for a diaper, how will anyone know what I mean?

We call it knickers here in England. (name on package is usually briefs though I've never heard anyone using that).
And boys underwear are pants.

That works in England because actual pants are trousers, right? But in America pants are worn on top of the underwear, so that would have everyone quite confused as to why you are dressing your boys in two pairs of pants.

What are proper people from England?
In English:
Toilets are for toilets.
Bathrooms are for baths.
Panties are knickers for girls, pants for boys.
Diapers are Nappies.
Pantyhose are tights.

My dh does this. He still gets confused when I ask him for a diaper. Like, our baby's not spitting up anymore, so what exactly do you need....? He's not chassidish, though.
Panties is not an inappropriate word, but for those of us used to hearing it in zexual contexts, it feels weird to have a little child say it. When I think of panties I think of Victoria's Secret.
