I have a BA in humanities from 15 years ago. How much schooling would it take for me to become a licensed family therapist? And how could I do this effectively with the least amount of cost? I'm in the dreaming stage... but seriously thinking about this... thank you!!!

2 years masters program 2 years working (full time) afterwards to get your license.

You have to be REALLY passionate about it, otherwise it's not worth it.

Two years in school PLUS two years working to get licensed? Do you get paid during that two years of working or is this what people mean when they say “doing the hours”?

And any recommendations for online schools for a masters?

Thank you very much!

2 years working - that is "doing the hours". Some internships are paid but some are not. It's not a lot of money at that level so take that into account.

No recommendations for online - I did local (OOT).

I would also recommend social work over a masters in counseling/family therapy because if you don't like counseling, you can do other things as a social worker, but not vice versa.
