Looking for a rec for an online coding program. Ds motivated and able to sit and stay with it until he learns it, and since he has no other plans this summer I think it's a good idea. But I don't know anything about this and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed trying to find a program. He's done Scratch and all the younger kid stuff.

Can anyone recommend a good online program?

Check out mooc there are lots of moocs (massive open online courses) on software writing...
The courses are for free, you then can pass an exam, for free too, if you want a certificate, you have to pay a modest fee...
Courses are from best Universities...
Check it out..

It's pretty much impossible to learn to code offline- it's not the type of thing you can learn from a book. it's very interactive (unless maybe you find some kind of downloadable software? I don't know of anything though)

I'm not familiar with this specific book, but this is a great publisher and it looks like a good textbook for learning Python (which is considered a good first programming language).

Learning Python, 5th Edition by Mark Lutz (O'Reilly)

You will need to download some things for him, but once he has python and all packages installed he can work through the book without the Internet.

I've been buying python books for my teen ds who has a knack for it. Amazon has lots of them.

I know you said you don't want online, but my DD did this course last summer.
I was recommended it by someone on imamother and it was very good.

https://www.coursera.org/learn/python

It's not free but not expensive.

I was also recommended this book:

https://www.amazon.com/Self-Ta.....ite=1

But didn't try it, but might be worth looking into, if you don't want an online course.
