Anything I should look at in particular when buying a smock?

From my experience in preschool (and younger) classroom. If the child is a toddler, please get one that is toddler size. It should not fit too loosely and sleeves shouldn't need to be rolled up multiple times. Young kids (especially if they have sensory issues or are new to messy activities) hate dealing with the extra fabric when trying to paint. Make sure that it has long sleeves. It should close with a velcro or a snap, not string - when doing a messy activity and trying to keep a class of young kids engaged, all the teacher needs is to have to start tying bows on the back of 10 kids smocks...

Something like this is very good. There are multiple size options for different ages, it has a plastic lining in the front so it keeps kids dry-ish during water play, too.

I think silly Billyz also makes a long sleeve smock that is water resistant (wipe clean type).

Old fashioned typical gingham smocks are the best. Lasts long and has plastic on the reverse side.
