I haven't done it in several years, but I've made the checkerboard cake from spice and spirit a couple of times. It was quite a bit of work, but delicious. I don't remember using any special pan; I'm almost positive I used a disposable cookie sheet.

I've made it a few times using the special cake pans with dividers. It came out very pretty, but the taste was just OK. I need a different cake recipe. I used the one that came with the pans. Its a thick batter, so the 2 colored batters wont mix, but it makes a dense cake.

You don;t need a special pan. You use 3 cake layers in two different colors. if you use two box mixes one of the 4 layers will not be used. It's a little detailed to explain, but really easy to do, so if you want directions, let me know
