Trying to recall the name of the music teacher (who taught with an accordian.)
I remember songs from then including 'Oh Dovid, I've sent you this letter', 'The lights are dim'

Was it Seymore Rockoff?
I believe he was our music teacher at SAR and my husband's in Brooklyn too!
He had an accordion and made the Day School rounds.

Was it Seymore Rockoff?
That name doesn't sound familiar at all. Thank you though.

What an idiot sidebar comment.
A snob is someone who knocks others thinking they are superior, knowing nothing of the person and their middot.

How did someone who went to dov revel become a kollel wife??🙂
I went to a different school in queens during the 70’s-80’s and we used to call it dov devil 😈
Sorry, I can’t help you with figuring out who your music teacher was...
I was just trying to explain to my kids what an accordion is. I asked dh why this instrument is no longer played. We both don’t know why but remember it from back in the days...

To answer your question:
There are many people who came from modern homes, who became frumer, yeshivishe (although it wasn't called that then.)
Dov Revel wasn't a bad place when I went to school. No devilish behavior that I remember. I and many of my friends went to Michlala, and I think going to E"Y is what made us frummer. I went to Central in Manhattan for high school.

Rabbi Rockoff played piano, not accordion.

I was there in the 80's but our music teacher used a piano if I remember correctly. I remember the art and music rooms being on the same level and there being a dark little hallway in that stretch that had a window that looked down into the gym (maybe the music/art rooms were on some inbetween level?).
Sorry I can't be more help, but I found a Facebook page for our old school - maybe try posting there?

Those are JEP songs. Was the teacher one of the original JEP group?

Lol, really? At first I thought it might have been a comment on the hashkafas of the students, but looking back, I'm wondering if you're thinking of how often our poor principals left after one year! Though in all fairness, Dr Charner was there for years , it just took them a while to find a permanent replacement for him after he retired.
As for hashkafically, I would say most of us probably clocked in as modern Orthodox, as in we had tvs, went to movies, listened to music on the radio, etc. , but were shomer Shabbos , Kashrus and mitzvot. We were a mix of Ashkenazim and Sefardim, with most of the Sefardim coming from Iran after Jews started leaving that area.
