I just got a donut with a hole in it with just some simple powdered sugar on top this week from Nechama’s on the corner of Yafo and Strauss. It was delicious!

I lack American credentials and discernment(!), but I came across some rather good ones fitting this description in the shuk last year. Still warm when I bought them, so I sampled them while waiting for the bus. Everyone else had to eat them cold at home. |
Where?!?!

What I consider genuine American style donuts -- are always fried. You can buy baked "cake donuts" in America and they can be yummy, but they don't taste the same at all even if they look the same and have the hole in the middle.

Here's a picture visually demonstrating how American donuts are made. I've never deep fried anything, and the one time I tried it was a big mess, so I can't make donuts at home. I could make the baked "cake donut" kind, but that's not what I crave.

Israeli sufganiot are deep fried but have a different dough, and like most Israeli food -- are less fatty and less sweet than their American counterpart.
Totally different taste, not just missing a hole in the middle.

Yea, just realized donut pan will get me Enteman's style baked donuts, but not Dunkin Donuts style fried with frosting.
I've tried the fried thing before, not much of a success.

Nechama bakery is so far the best I’ve ever had!
Also really really good is chibah bakery (חבה) it’s in yafo towards the shuk....a tiny hole in the wall disheveled looking place but incredible stuff!

In the covered shuk, not far in, but I have to admit that I don't actually remember which stall. Sorry!

Brooklyn Bakery is the only one with American donuts.
Warning - they have lines down the block on Chanukah and once they sell out, the store is closed for the day. Go at 10am.
To get there - take any bus to Kikar Shabbos, walk about 2 blocks down Rechov Meah Shearim and the store is on your left.
yum!
