The post about graphic designers intrigued me. As a writer, I'm wondering what the normal range for writers is.

I'll go first: I write part-time for magazines and occasional copywriting and other writing gigs. That plus yearly profit from published books usually takes me between 25-30k for part-time. This is not my main job at all.

I'm curious to hear from other writers where their salary falls.

Writing is a side job for me and I don't consistently invest in it. I make between $150-250 per freelance article. I never really find the koach to do more than maybe 3 per week, and that's on a week with nothing else going on (yom tov, kids quarantined, etc) so I'm not really making an income with this, but it helps and I enjoy it.

Content writer for a start up, though it's not a full time job. It's about 40 shekel an hour, or 100 shekel per article. Some months I get nothing, other months it's 10 articles a week.

Here are some ideas.
Tip: start cheap so you can build up a small portfolio and get word of mouth work.

Cool - who does he work for? If you don't want to name the actual publication, is it Jewish or secular, magazine or newspaper, national or local? How many articles does he write daily/weekly? And what kind of beat does he cover?

It's a national, online, secular publication. Interestingly though there are quite a few frum people who work there! If you want more details I'm happy to talk on PM. He's been a general news reporter for a few years but recently moved to the legal beat. As a general news reporter he was typically writing at least an article a day, but now that he's on a more specialized beat it can take him a few days to write something due to the research, interviewing, getting hold of experts, etc.

I write/edit one weekly publication that pays me $300/week.

I also do editing for a magazine and get paid $1500 per issue.

I used to also write freelance articles for about $150 each but it was time consuming to research/write and $150 didn't really cover the investment of time, so I don't do it as much anymore. The site I used to write for has a big circulation though so it was good for name recognition.

I occasionally do translating work and I charge by the job; length, depth, complexity. Can bring in anywhere from $200-$1000.

So total, I make about $20,000 per year off my writing. It's not my main job.

Standard BY/sem education. I had good writing skills and knew my way around seforim. I knew how to take a concept from a sefer and present it in down-to-earth language.

Later I did get a degree and a master's in a completely unrelated field.
