I haven't read this whole thread so if someone has already mentioned my idea, apologies.
By a length of thick grosgrain ribbon in one of the colors in the robe. Remove the straps, and sew the ribbon in place.

I bought this style from Target and used it as a robe for my daughter. Just a warning: it is really uncomfortable with a shell underneath, the smocking is supposed to be snug on the chest, and the whole robe doesnt sit well.
