Pronounced “Geela” or “Gella”? The first one means happiness. Idk about the second one.

I haven’t heard anyone under 80 named Gela but I have heard it in my great grandmother’s family tree from Poland if that helps anything. Any family member who wanted similar used Gila .

It means one with golden hair. It comes from the German word “Gehl” which is basically the color yellow. Same as in yiddish.

When you Google it, it says it’s of Hebrew origin. I know that in German and Yiddish , yellow is gehl. Which would make sense “yellow, blonde, golden hair”

Lol. I didn't either, until I moved to a new neighborhood.
I have three Gellas on my block. The youngest is still in diapers

I guess there are different dialects. My maiden name is also rooted in the German word Gehl. I did some research now and found that Gehl also means yellow in German.

There was once an article in the Bina regarding the name Gela. A story about Eliyahu Hanavi being "megala". There is said that most Gelas come from that origin. I'd love to get hold of that article as the story mentioned happened to my husbands family and we have lots of Gelas.

Like in many languages words have variants.

Gela means yellow, and so do Gelb, geller, etc.

The common nickname is Gelly.

My father had a cousin Gelli and a cousin Geulah. I assumed Gelli was a nickname for Geulah.
