You mean SJS?

It’s pretty rare.. but yes, always good to be on alert.

Also op, probiotics- if he’s not on it yet- super important with abx.

What is abx?

I have a 7 month old with eczema and a bright patch on cheek. Dr thought that perhaps infection is on skin, but did not culture and prescribed keflex.

I decided to give pro biotics and hold off on the keflex. will the probiotics by itself perhaps resolve the eczema? anyone experience this?

My baby is now 16 months. He has had eczema since about 3 or 4 months. From then until now he has seen the pediatrician, dermatologist and 2 different allergists, each several times.
They all prescribed different creams and regimens for his eczema.
The eczema is not terrible. At times it seemed mostly under control, at times it would flare up.
But there was always a small patch on his chin that never went away. No matter how much I paid attention, using creams and hydrocortisone, it was always there. Sometimes worse and sometimes better.

The last time I went to the allergist he said, let me check the chin area because maybe there is bacteria growing on it.
He took a sample to send to the lab. The result is that it was a heavy growth of bacteria. Doctor prescribed a round of medication and now the patch is GONE.

I'm posting this in case it could help another mother out there. I never knew this was a thing. This is my first son with eczema. I can't believe he had this bacteria growing on his chin for over a year!
If you have a similar situation, ask your doctor to check if the area is infected.

My Dr says that they can't culture the patch since it is flat and there is no pus or oozing. Was your child's patch oozing or also flat and dry?

It was crusty. No pus or ooze.

Thank you for replying! My child's is also a little crusty. She took the culture with my begging, and I hope with siyatta dishmaya, that it comes back accurately so that we can treat accordingly.

Also, be careful with probiotics. I started, with direction from somoene, but it was way too high of a dose, and first the eczema cleared up and then it got waaaaaaaaaay worse. My child was in pain as well from it. I stopped it for now, until I do more research.

I just want to come back here and say that I finished the whole round of antibiotocs and the eczema is still there.
Originally I thought it was gone, but its not. The medicine took away the infection, but not the eczema that was underneath it... 😔

Look, chances are it will come back growing bacteria, because you have bacteria on your skin. It does NOT mean though it needs to be treated. Some doctors see growth on a culture and jump to treat. It is NOT a good idea to treat every culture (especially with oral antibiotics) because it will just create antibiotics resistance and mess up your gut.
We recently dealt with a wound infection that urgent care that cultured it and 1 specialist we spoke to prescribed antibiotics. But pediatrician and other specialist said start with treating topically- apply bactroban. Bh the infection cleared up. (The situation would be different had their been fever or wbc in culture)

I hope you can figure out if that patch is infected or just the eczema. I’m not a medical professional- just a mom that dealt with lots of different infections... so definitely check in with your doc and if he prescribes antibiotics double check it is truly needed.

Oh! I'm sorry to hear that! Does it look different to you though? Is it less crusty? Not as bright red or any different at all? Does your son still have eczema on other parts of his face?

Did you try pro biotics to cure it?

Sorry. Meant to say if the patch is infected or if it’s just an eczema patch. Does it look different than other spots?

Antibiotics won't take away eczema. Only ways I know of controlling truly bad eczema, are thru diet (if triggered by allergies) and/or steroids (which should be used sparingly). You'd need to talk with a doctor about either option.. Sometimes kids outgrow it.

when my son was younger and had severe eczema we were recomended by a top dermatologist to give him a bath with a small cup of bleach in it to remove all bacteria a few times a week. at first I thought he was insane but I tried it. it worked wonders and helped my son so so much.
please look into it

Beige, I hope you read this.
The culture did come back positive. Prescribed Keflex. It's not like I have a dr that I trust right now. How would you go about this now?

And OP- is the patch still there? did it change in any way after the antibiotics?

Do you know what it was positive for? Curious, because my child has had numerous eczema infections and was never prescribed keflex for any of them.
Not OP but my child has extremely severe eczema and antibiotics don't help the eczema at all. They clear up the infection so the oozing, pus, etc. will hopefully go away but the actual eczema won't be healed by the antibiotics.
