YAIR

Gender: Masculine

Usage: Jewish

Other Scripts: יָאִיר (Hebrew)
Hebrew form of JAIR

JAIR

Gender: Masculine

Usage: Biblical

Other Scripts: יָאִיר (Hebrew)

Pronounced: JAY-ur [key]
Means "he shines" in Hebrew. In the Old Testament this is the name of both a son of Manasseh and one of the judges of the Israelites.

Jay-ur??? ew

Adar is a girl's name in Israel (it also isn't a very Jewish one IMHO). Then again, as soon as you turn round here, boys' and girls' names interchange Rolling Eyes .

Yeah, I find that trend quite confusing. When hearing an Israeli name, I often don't know whether the person is a man or a woman.

true.

Some of my MO Israeli (girl) cousins bear names I associate with boys (think Nir, Yair)

Funny my two sil's gave birth one to a boy and another to a girl. The girl was named noa. and the boy zissel. And to me Noa is a boys name and Zissel is a girls name. My aunts name is Zissel and my uncle named his son Noa.

Yep everytime I see them I always think of them as the different gender.

My cousin has a boy named Ma'ayan and a girl named Ariel.
I associate both names with the opposite gender.

I was just telling my husband last night about twins in a school I taught in. Their names were Or and Lior, and before I met them I didnt know which was the girl or boy. He said "I hear that, but Lior is always the boy." I said "Yea, but here it was the girl!"

These days a lot of people like to give crossover names-- Ones that can work for both English and Hebrew.

True. But some say a boy Ariel will be teased in America, because of the mermaid, while a girl Ariel would be weird in Hebrew as technically it should be ariela?
