Question in title.
Would you wash brand new linen before using?

Yes. It’s not as if I have to haul water from a well, boil it on a wood fire and stir the pot with a broomstick.

Yes, it usually has a smell that comes with the newness and it's also very firm and uncomfortable.

Absolutely yes. New textile items are always full of chemicals. No need to expose one's skin to that.

Yup every time. I just like the smell of fresh linen and assume my guests would too. also washes off whatever happened in the process of making linen to warehouse and packaging. All the machine and Hands on them. Dust you can’t see.
Also I feel them come out softer from the wash.

The textile is “conditioned” with all sorts of chemicals to give it that shiny look and fake silk touch. It’s best to wash it off before.

I’d put it on bed to make sure I love it first
Recently bought a set of linen I loved. On my bed it looked like a grandmothers old couch. BH I Had not washed it bec they let me return it.

Yes! Fabric is treated with who knows what chemicals these days.
Once I had a allergic reaction to a piece of new clothing I didn’t prewash. Broke out in a full body rash and my face started to swell. Had to go the ER. Learned my lesson & I always prewash new linens, towels, clothing…etc.

I remember a couple of years ago on rosh hashana there was a boy that came to shul.. when father looked at him he saw his face was tinged blue got frantic and so did everyone around him they called hatzalo but they could not find the issue, he felt fine but looked terrible. eventually one clever man decided to take a towel and wipe his face and color came off he slept on new blue bedding that had not been washed..
so yeah I would wash them first.
