I think it depends on the subject. Like science books you can read but accounting books you can't.

As long as you won't be tempted to take notes or work out a problem why not read it when you can?

But then again I have no problem reading secular material on shabbat or anytime...

I wouldn't. It is not in the spirit of shabbos, and besides it's kind of 'preparing' for after shabbos.

I asked my LOR who said I can study if I find the material interesting.

But I tried not to when I had no interest except for an upcoming test Smile

Ask your LOR but I actually did hear this. You can read science books but probably not finance books.

Yeah I didn't want to say it as a fact because I only remember hearing this once from a friend or someone like that. I think science specifically was ok because it's about the briah (the spelling is not working no matter what I try šŸ™ˆ). Math specifically not. I'm curious about all the other subjects - literature, sociology, etc...

But yes definitely ask your LOR for a psak altz halacha. If you think it's not good for you hashkafically then maybe wait till motzai Shabbos.

I think it's fine if it's enjoyable.

I never read assigned books on Shabbes, even English literature courses.

It just did not seem right.

Same here. I asked and got the same response. It's not the subject matter that defines if you can or can't read on Shabbos/YT, it is what you find interesting that makes it acceptable.
