Just by the names of the places you are looking, it's pretty clear why the prices are so high. If a place has the words "custom" and "couture" in their name, or both together, you should expect before you go in that the prices will be very high. Also judging by the names of the places you are going, I would say you are going to all heimishe shops so of course you will be paying more.
I just quickly looked at Macys evening gowns and there were absolutely stunning gowns (truly perfect for mother of the chasson or kallah), some even already tznius and other needing just some work, all for under $1000. Branch out of the heimishe shops and you will shave thousands off your price.
Or even better, go to a gmach! Why pay for a new gown to wear for a few hours?

The answer is because they can. There are people who are willing to pay these insane prices. There are plenty of cheaper options like Exquisite.

We stick to Bridal Direct. Augenbrun and Exquisite. Will definitely stay under $1k including alterations probably even if you make something brand new with them.

You're naming top of the line places.
There are many more low key options.

Why are you shopping in such fancy places if you don't want to pay their prices?
I rented a beautiful gown at Augenbraun in the $500 range. You can also buy from Exquisite for less than 1k.

Try Dassy Klar in Airmont. I believe her prices are more reasonable and she does a beautiful job.

My mother always borrows from someone (she actually wore the same gown three weddings in a row, over a span of10 years)so
We are not the type to go to any of the places you mentioned
My wedding gown was from a gemach.
Next wedding I borrowed
Next 2 weddings I borrowed
I've never spent more than $50 plus dry cleaning on a gown
Maybe wedding gown was more to borrow, but it was a donation. For sure$250 or less.
We don't find out clothes to be worth spending so much on.

Dassy Klar is expensive. Not cheaper than the one's OP listed.

Never heard of 3-5K for mother of bride.
But as with most things there are always over the top more expensive options our there for those who want that .
Of course there are plenty of more manageable options and a whole range
(As well as gemachs etc)

my question was
can it be justified?
does it really cost that much?
if yes - how are the others less expensive?

The places you listed use high end expensive fabrics and materials. Their dressed are quality dresses. They also to custom, custom is always more expensive than a ready dress. It's way more work.
Cheaper dresses are of Cheaper quality and Cheaper look. You can't compare a Ruthies or Exquisite gown to a higher end gown.

I'm finding your question odd. Why should they justify their prices to you?
Creative, artistic endeavors are priceless, in the sense that the creator of a work of art and charge whatever they think it's worth. Depending on demand will need to adjust their price accordingly.
Obviously there's enough demand.

You can ask this about anything. How come Steve Madden sells shoes for $60 but Valentino for $1200?
Different brands, different quality, different prices.
Gowns don’t start at 3k. The stores you are looking at are higher end and sell for that price. You can definitely find cheaper elsewhere if you wanted to look

People have lost their marbles. Half the people buying in these places cannot afford it.
