In that case can I recommend a biography? I just finished one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It is considered the best biography of Winston Churchill - Churchill: Walking With Destiny by Andrew Roberts. It is not a breezy read but absolutely worth it!

More authors:
Connie Willis (her time travel books are very historical)
M. M. Kaye (esp The Far Pavilions)
Geraldine Brooks (esp People of the Book)
Alice Hoffman (just weed out her fantasy stuff. I personally loved Blackbird House and The World That We knew)
Also, if you haven't read Gone With the Wind, it's worth a read for the historical stuff.

I like cleaner books but can't stand Christian stuff that's trying to get me to believe in Yoshke. What authors do you recommend for that?
