My daughter is turning 19 and will have to go off of Child Health Plus.
I was told she should get on Medicaid.
Words have been thrown out like straight medicaid,
can someone help me understand what does that mean?
What is straight medicaid?
Do I pick a plan?
How do I know what plan to pick?
Thank You

Very very few People qualify for straight Medicaid. There are a few exclusions like HIV but most people only get managed. Most of the straight Medicaid I see is secondary to diagnosis (ssd) not income. Pick a managed care

Straight Medicaid is when you don’t have an HMO and it goes directly through the state. I’ve found many doctors don’t accept it. Best to enroll in an HMO.

Straight Medicaid is not a plan. It’s just Medicaid. People with disabilities and eligible for SSI are approved for straight Medicaid so they always have insurance and can never get thrown off.

Straight Medicaid is good if your child has special needs and needs home and community based care. Those are really the only people who Medicaid allows to have Straight Medicaid. Otherwise she will need to be on an HMO.

Special needs need an hmo too. Basically you need to be Native American, in the foster care system, have HIV to be on straight medicaid. Disabled people with ssi can get straight medicaid for now but they're slowly forcing everyone into an hmo.

After the 18th birthday your child can apply for her own personal insurance/Medicaid plan and if she’s not making lots of money she should be eligible for Medicaid. You don’t have to pick an hmo but there are very few decent drs and dentist that accept straight Medicaid. Ask her current dr and dentist which hmos they accept and chose that one.

Unless your daughter has ssi, you will have to pick an hmo. Some are better than 9thers
