that one can daven on the day of the yarzheit of grandparents even going back a few generations?
going through difficult challenges and want to daven that my ancestors should intervene for me...is there such a thing even? or is a yarzheit all about elevating their neshama?

It's a very real thing in the chassidish world because it is based on kabblah.
There are levels to this.
For instance, in the three days of the yurtzeit the neshama descends to the kever so it is a real thing to go to the kever and be mispalel there.
You do things in favor of the neshama but you can also ask them for favors in return.

Some hold it is forbidden to "pray to the deceased" which includes asking the deceased to
intervene for you.
They hold one must pray directly to Hashem and ask in the ZECHUS of the
deceased, Hashem should answer their prayers.
Others hold one may ask the deceased to intervene for them.

yes I heard of that. regardless of how I daven (think dh holds you can daven direct but I do both) I wanted to know if you can actually daven - not by a kever of a tzadik and not in the zechus, just cos a ancestor so there is the connection, do they have the power to intervene just cos I am there grandchild...

Yes you can.
Everyday in Shemona Esrei we ask Hashem to answer our prayers in the zechus of our "Zeidys"
Avrohom, Yitzchok and Ya'akov.
So your great-grandfather is not "too distant" a relative!
