what about a fan or turning it on after he's asleep? Did you ever ask him why he is, unless he's too little to ask.

Don't turn it on when he's asleep! Imagine waking up in middle of the night to something you fear
A fan is a good idea.
How about you hold him and let him touch it, turn it on, play a game with it?
Change settings together so he can feel different strengths of the air.
Maybe hold ribbons to it, or get a pinwheel fan to hold in front of it so he will grow to like it-- because something fun can't be scary!

I used to have the same problem.
first, I'd have it running, so that he'd get used to the noise a bit- even tho he was still scared and didn't go into the room.
then every night, we wud read the air conditioner a story and blow it a good night kiss and then I wud tell my son, that the ac also needs to go to sleep and can he turn it on so it can get its rest. eventually one night, he said yes. sounds bizarre and a bit crazy, but hey, whatever works.
hasnt been afraid since...
good luck...
