I do overalls until I start toilet training.
It's so much easier for little kids to just pull down regular pants.
But I think they're adorable. If they wouldn't be so impractical I would keep my kids in them till 4 or 5.

Not past three and probably more like two and a half. You have to see what the other kids in his playgroup or class are wearing. If they wear them, so can he, but if they don't, don't put him in them unless you want him to end up on a shrink's couch one day from the trauma of being called a baby by his more sophisticated peers.
Also if he's anywhere near potty training, overalls are O-U-T unless you love accidents.

Why? Even adults wear overalls. Wear till whenever it looks cute.
