I got a call from a mother tonight that theyre collecting money for 2 morahs this year for chanukah.
do I also give a gift? im giving 20$ towards the collective gift, and I was going to give 2 teachers 50$ each. I was told thats how much is given now. we really struggle to make ends meet, but I know how impt it is to show hakaras hatov to therapists, teachers. the type I would rather give 50$ to the teacher and not eat fleishig one night. which is probably not the right thing to do but....
anyway, do I also give a separate gift? even maybe 30$ or something

If I participate in a class gift I do not give another gift. A year that my kid has an exceptional teacher that I want to acknowledge I give my own gift and don't participate in the class gift

This is what I have done in the past also.

If you would've given $50, give $20 toward the class gift and an additional $30 directly to the teacher.
