I have worked privately with some children, but I stopped mainly because I couldn't figure out what would be financially worth it to me but not too much for parents. I've reconsidered though and realize that since this is an area that's lacking in the area I should be doing it at a rate that works for me rather than not doing it at all. Parents that need help with the fee can then negotiate and I can decide whether or not to subsidise.
I currently have a lot of experience working with children and I have the schooling degree and certifications to back that.
I have read a few posters complaining that the rates of private therapists are too high. Question I have is what would you consider an okay rate for someone to work with your child?

Can you be any more specific? Work in what capacity? As a shadow? OT? Would you have an option to bill insurance since you have all the certifications?

Billing insurance is complicated and not usually possible. I am being vague but would say consider me a very experienced tutor that can help your child learn to learn and to deal with behaviors.

What is your experience? Schooling? Certification/ License?
I for one stay far away from the people who are 'coaches',/ 'mentors' for my children.
If you are a credentialed therapist then you can charge the going rate. Around 150 give or take a session.

I know I can charge $150 because I know I can charge $200 as well, but my question is more about the fact that I've often seen parents on here complaining about the private rates being too high so I was wondering if there is a specific rate parents would feel more comfortable with. When parents complain it's too high is that for $150 rate, lower, or higher than that which is causing the complaint..
No I'm not a mentor or life coach. I am really licensed, overly certified, and have over 15 years of experience for the field I am in.

Op I know you don't want to and that's OK but you will not get appropriate responses without saying what exactly you are.
A highly qualified reading specialist, OT, life coach and doula will all have different rates

If you have a good reputation and are very good at what you do then you can charge at the high end. If you are trying to make it out there and are looking to build yourself up then you really cannot charge a high rate. Start with the lower end and make people happy with your work so eventually you can increase (after around 2 years of building up your name). You might be very qualified but that won’t help you much. You would have to be superb at what you do so people know it’s worth investing.
Also if people can get the same service covered by insurance there would have to be an extremely good reason for them to pay you out of pocket.
Personally I took my child for speech therapy for many years and it was covered through insurance. At one point I decided I would pay whatever I have to to help my child with speech and I was looking for the absolute top therapist. Well, top therapist got paid but my child didn’t improve so we stopped going.
You really have to be excellent at what you do if you want people to be happy paying you for your service.

Based on the responses I am getting I am assuming I was not very clear with what I am looking for. If you as a parent paid for a private therapist or looked into hiring one for your child what rate did you feel was okay and wasn't daylight robbery? I realize that to be considered a good therapist I do need to charge a decent price and though I can charge it it sometimes makes me queasy when I see parents writing how difficult and how out of control the pricing are. I am looking for a parent's perspective on what would be a price that would let you know you are getting quality service without it feeling like it was breaking your bank
