Is this normal? He has no idea what to do with bits of mashed food I put in his mouth. It ends up dribbling out. He is also not sitting independently yet. Otherwise developing normally, pulling himself on the floor, babbling, etc.

Have you tried putting food down for him to pick up?

I had the same thing. I went to the doctor with the baby and he wasn't at all concerned. He told me to give it another couple of months.
Suddenly at 10 months it clicked and he started eating beautifully. He hasn't stopped since!

I had two who didn’t want any food until 11 months. Both good eaters now BH

Don't put food in his mouth. Put it down before him and let him explore/play with the food, some might end up in his mouth, some not. And with time, he'll learn that food goes in the mouth.

My kid wasn’t either interested at that age. I strongly suggest a baby-led weaning approach (google it). Ditch the jars, stop putting food in his mouth. Give him real foods to explore and taste.

My babies don't sit independently until very late but they're very advanced gross motor otherwise. As long as they have core strength (can sit up in your lap), are 6+ months, bring items to mouth, they can do baby led weaning. Another sign of interest is if they watch you eat, grab for your food or make chewing motions as you eat. Definitely ditch boring mashed food and let him eat real whole foods- baby led weaning

Your baby should be able to sit (with a bit of assistance) before they are ready for solids.
Bring him to the table, let him play and explore, it will eventually click.
Does he bring toys to his mouth ? That shows some readiness
