I usually make white fish for shabbos. All I do is bring a pot of water to a boil, add a whole onion quartered, a large carrot, a large stalk celery, a LOT of sugar , like a whole cup, we like it sweet ( also if you're using pike skin to make the water gel, the gel tastes a lot better with a lot of sugar) bring the whole thing to a boil, add the fish slices, and cook about 1 1/2 - 2 hours.

Thanks cindy324. You are a lifesaver. I am making white fish tonight. What do you mean by using pike skin to make the water gel?

Anyone else have any white fish recipes? You could probbably substitute it where cod would be used. Any ideas?

Sure.

Boil very little water. Add a lot of cut up onions and a lot of sugar and some salt.

Add your slices. Cook very little, just until the slices flake.

Serve cold.

I am making white fish this week, never made it really, we eat salmon here. I also want to add the gefilte to the pot. DO I add it after the white fish is almost done? I remember that I didn't put them all in together.

I would first cook the gefilte, since it needs more time than the white fish does
but since you already cooked the fish, I would take it out, and then put in the gefilte for 1 and a half -2 hours

I make my fish in a frying pan, on top of browned onions - brown, turn over and add lemon juice and spices, simmer until done.

how long do you simmer it for? I have thin, long fish fillets, how long do they need if I do it ina a frying pan with a bit of tomato sc and onion?

So do you have to use pike skin to make it gell or will it gell? The fillets I get have skin on them.
