Should special paint be used to paint a bathroom or is regular paint on? I see Benjamin Moore has special bathroom paints that say they hold up better to humidity but my painter is telling me this isn’t needed and regular paint is fine. Is that correct??

Not sure.
I had some mold issues in my bathroom, but it was from leakage from a skylight. I had the skylight/roofing issues repaired, and then painted my bathroom using a mold-killing primer and mold-resistant paint.
I don't know if it's needed but I do think it's not a bad idea to use, even if you don't have a skylight in your bathroom.

You have to take into account the following:
Ventilation - if your ventilation is good, most paints aren’t going to peel or bubble, or need mold-preventing additive.
Sheen - higher sheens like gloss or semi gloss hold up better to moisture than flat. So if you’re going with a semi-gloss, any paint will work. If you really want a matte or eggshell paint, you’re probably better off going for a bathroom-specific paint, unless your ventilation is very good.
