If its for dov should have a veis
If it's for dovid should have a vav

My brother is dovid and we called him dovi (short u sound like dovid) when he was little, but always wrotehis name as dovid
Never nickname spelled out

Right. It's the Hebrew spelling of Dovi. I don't think there's a different spelling if you choose to nickname Dovi for Dovid. You can use Dovid when writing.

דווי would more correct, but looks a bit weird.

Right its weird, thats why we spell it דובי (even though his name is dovid)

Nicknames can be really spelled any which way, just like they could be pronounced any way. Theres no correct way.

In literary Hebrew, דווי (pronounced dah-vai) means suffering. The phrase ערש דווי means a deathbed.

I would misspell the nickname with a ב.

That is true when translating from an original language to a foreign one, such as hebrew to english as it is a made up spelling anyway.

Buy when you are actually writing it in its own language-hebrew-there is no “made up” way. You are writing the nickname for Dov/דוב. No matter how you want to convince yourself otherwise.

And that it what it will be looked as by all. Please don't do this to your son. It is literally laughable.

The hebrew way to write the nickname for Dovid/דוד, if you are calling him Duh-vi or Doo-vi, (and dont want to just write דוד), would be דוי.

Reminds me of my American neighbors in EY who named their daughter basya and didn't want her nicknamed batti in school...
So they made her legal Israeli name beis samech yud. Rolling Eyes literally named her bassi and spelled according to pronunciation for israelis

I thought that was crazy

That's like dovid with a veis in nickname

Omg, I would read that as Bessie, like the cow.
