GED Test: Has your child taken it?

Ds failed the essay portion on the HiSet (equivalent to GED) and we can't figure out why. There's no feedback report and when I called them they said there’s no way to speak to the people that grade it. I'm truly puzzled because I teach writing skills and every essay he showed me was higher than average.
I'm entertaining the thought of having ds switch to the GED for the writing portion (our state allows for mixing GED and HiSet subtests) but I'm wondering if there's any point to doing that.
Has anyone taken the GED? Has your child taken it? What can you tell me about the writing portion? What are the expectations and how hard was it to pass?
