I cant find a baby gate (that is reasonably priced) that I can install properly. My apt has molding by the base that prevents the pieces from connecting to the wall well. Any suggestions?

A piece of 2x4, with a little shpitz cut out by the molding. That gets attached to the wall, the gate gets attached to the wood.

I looked at my moldings and they all have a flat area that would be possible to install a gate into.
But if yours don't, is the molding high? Can you just screw the gate the 2 inches above the floor?
Another solution: I have a gate by the stairs. We screwed the hinges into the wall and the hardware for the other side went into the wooden banister pole. That pole is carved and not straight, so what we did was- we bought 2 small wooden plaques from an arts and crafts shop and drilled them into the pole on the bottom and the top. Then drilled the hardware sockets into that.
